Weathering the Storm: Extra Care for Zoo Animals in Action

The Welsh Mountain Zoo, National Zoological Society of Wales, has announced its decision to close its gates for the day as Storm Éowyn sweeps across North Wales, safeguarding its guests and focusing on the care of its many animal residents.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for North Wales, with winds of up to 90mph anticipated today.

The Zoo’s dedicated Keeper team continues to offer the highest level of care for its animals, ensuring their welfare remains the highest priority today, and during other recent adverse weather conditions.

Steven Lester, Director of Business Development and Operations at the Welsh Mountain Zoo explained: “We anticipated this closure following earlier weather warnings, and the Zoo will remain closed for today. The safety and welfare of our guests, staff, and of course our animals, will continue to drive the decisions we make and a full closure today was the only option for us. Our brilliant keeper team will keep a close eye on all animals during this time, ensuring they are safe and warm during this period of extreme weather.

“January, so far, has seen several instances of severe and adverse weather, with this resulting in Zoo closure over several days - decisions we never take lightly. This not only impacts the vital revenue that helps support us as a Zoo and a charity, it also affects the many guests who were looking forward to a great day out with us. With the global climate crisis bringing with it more regular extreme weather events it’s important now more than ever that we take time to reflect on these matters and understand the impact all of our actions have on the environment, working together in the future to protect our communities and the world at large.”
